AVIMux GUI supports softsub.
Types of softsub supported : srt, ssa.

srt : No style.
ssa : Styled.

You can add subtitles to avi files without re-encoding/re-compressing.

AVIMux GUI does not support .ass file.
Technically speaking, .ass means "ssa version 4.00+".
You can easily convert your .ass file to .ssa using freeware Aegisub.

How?
1. Open your .ass file in Aegisub.
2. Click File (top left corner), and then click "Export Subtitles...".
3. A small window will appear. Click button "Export...".
4. A small window will appear. Type in your .ssa filename, e.g: subtitle1.ssa, subs.ssa.
IMPORTANT : DO NOT use .ass extension, e.g: subtitle.ass, subs.ass. This type of subtitle will not be supported by AVIMux GUI.
5. Click button save.
6. Use the new subtitle in AVIMux GUI.
